1. What message does the song communicate?

This song contrasts our frailty, sinful, limited nature with the eternal character and reign of God.  He is our Savior and Redeemer, causing us to worship Him in response.

Unfortunately, I could not find an original recording of this song by this artist.  From what I could gather, Chorus seems to repeat after each Verse and a few times at the end.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

The entire song agrees with the Bible.

[Verse 1]

We are a moment, You are forever
Lord of the ages, God before time
We are a vapor, You are eternal

Juxtaposes the limited life of humanity (Psalm 144:4 and James 4:14) with the eternality of God (Deuteronomy 33:27, 1 Chronicles 16:34, Job 36:26, Psalm 48:14, Psalm 90:2-4, Psalm 102:12, Psalm 102:26-27, Proverbs 8:23, Isaiah 40:28, Isaiah 41:4, Habakkuk 1:12, John 17:5, Romans 1:20, 1 Corinthians 2:7, Ephesians 1:4, Hebrews 1:11-12, 1 Peter 1:20, 2 Peter 3:8, Revelation 1:8, Revelation 11:17, and Revelation 22:13).

Love everlasting, reigning on high

God’s love lasts forever (1 Chronicles 16:34, 2 Chronicles 5:13, 2 Chronicles 20:21, Psalm 89:2, Psalm 100:5, Psalm 106:1, Psalm 107:1, Psalm 117:1-2, Psalm 118:1-29, and Psalm 136:1-26, Lamentations 3:22-23, and Romans 8:38-39).  As does His rule and reign (Exodus 15:18, Psalm 10:16, Psalm 29:10, Psalm 92:8, Psalm 145:13, Psalm 146:10, Lamentations 5:19, Daniel 4:3, Daniel 4:34, Daniel 6:26, Micah 4:7, 1 Timothy 1:17, 1 Peter 5:1, and Revelation 11:15).

[Chorus]

Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty
Worthy is the Lamb that was slain
Highest praises, honor and glory
Be unto Your name
Be unto Your name

Combines Revelation 4:8 with Revelation 5:8-14, offering praise to God.

[Verse 2]

We are the broken, You are the healer

Compares the deceitfulness and evil of man’s core in our hearts (Jeremiah 17:9) with God, who is our physician (Matthew 9:12, Mark 2:17, and Luke 5:31).

Jesus Redeemer, mighty to save

A sutble nod to Christ’s payment for our sins (Isaiah 53:1-12, Matthew 20:28, Mark 10:45, John 1:29, John 3:16, John 19:30, Acts 4:12, Acts 20:28, Romans 5:6-10, Romans 6:23, 1 Corinthians 1:30, 1 Corinthians 6:20, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Galatians 1:3-4, Galatians 3:13, Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 2:14, 1 Timothy 2:6, Titus 2:14, Hebrews 9:12, Hebrews 9:15, Hebrews 9:22, Hebrews 9:26, 1 Peter 1:17-21, 1 Peter 2:24, 1 Peter 1:18-19, 1 John 1:7, 1 John 2:1-2, and Revelation 5:9).

You are the love song we’ll sing forever
Bowing before You, blessing Your name

Mankind’s response to God’s lovingkindness is worship (see Chorus).

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

This simple message of man’s wickedness, God’s sovereignty, God’s salvation, and our response to His lovingkindness will not be lost on unbelievers.  The language used by Deshazo and Sadler is accessible to children, much less outsiders to Christianity!

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies God through its accurate portrayal of the character and nature of God and mankind.  We glorify God when we worship Him.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Lynn Deshazo and Gary Sadler’s Be Unto Your Name (We Are a Moment) is an excellent song.  Its power lies within its simplicity to express sound, Biblical truths in a format that all can comprehend, giving God glory.  These include man’s limited time on earth, God’s rule and reign that lasts forever, God’s salvation of mankind, and our collective worship in response.

I highly recommend this song for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
