Christians pop/rock band Elevation Worship has been active since 2007, releasing six independent albums, a remix, a Spanish album, an acoustic album, eight EP’s, and nine live albums. Graves Into Gardens is coming May 1, 2020.

Curiously, I did not see any award nominations to their name.

Unstoppable God joins ten other Elevation Worship reviews, cementing it as one of my most requested artists for review.

1. What message does the song communicate?

Elevation Worship makes many factual claims about God and man:

God

  • He created the universe.
  • He created man.
  • He is bigger than fear.
  • He cannot be moved.
  • His glory will not end.
  • In His name, impossible things will be done.
  • Jesus, who is God, died for man’s sins and defeated death.
  • His mercy is greater than His judgment.
  • His kingdom is eternal.

Man

  • We will return to the dust by which we were created.
  • We can move mountains with mustard seed faith.
  • We put our hope in God and resist fear.
  • It is implied that we move from slavery to sin to slavery to righteousness with God.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

All lyrics are Scriptural.

Lyrics posted with permission.*

[Verse 1]

Heaven thundered, and the world was born
Life begins and ends, in the dust You formed

God created the heavens, the earth (Genesis 1:1, Nehemiah 9:6, Psalm 8:3-8, Psalm 33:6, Psalm 96:5, Proverbs 3:19, Isaiah 37:16, Isaiah 42:5, Isaiah 45:18, Isaiah 66:1-2, John 1:1-3, Ephesians 3:9, Colossians 1:16, and Revelation 4:11) and that man, who is dust, will return to dust (Genesis 3:19, Job 34:15, Ecclesiastes 3:20, and Ecclesiastes 12:7).

Faith commanded, and the mountains moved

A rewording of faith that moves mountains (Matthew 17:20).

Fear is losing ground, to our hope in You

If we trust and put our hope in God, to what reason do we need to be afraid (Genesis 15:1, Joshua 1:9, Deuteronomy 31:6, 1 Chronicles 28:20, Psalm 23:4, Psalm 27:1, Psalm 34:4, Psalm 56:3-4, Psalm 94:19, Psalm 115:11, Psalm 118:6, Isaiah 35:4, Isaiah 41:10-13, Isaiah 43:1, Isaiah 54:4, John 14:25-27, Romans 8:15, Romans 8:38-39, 2 Timothy 1:7, Hebrews 13:5-6, 1 Peter 3:13-14, 1 Peter 5:6-7, and 1 John 4:18)?

[Chorus]

Unstoppable God

God and His plans cannot be ceased (Job 42:2).

Let Your glory go on and on

Praise offered to God, that His glory will be as eternal. Since God is eternal, it makes sense for His glory to go on forever also (Deuteronomy 33:27, 1 Chronicles 16:34, Job 36:26, Psalm 48:14, Psalm 90:2-4, Psalm 102:12, Psalm 102:26-27, Proverbs 8:23, Isaiah 40:28, Isaiah 41:4, Habakkuk 1:12, John 17:5, Romans 1:20, 1 Corinthians 2:7, Ephesians 1:4, Hebrews 1:11-12, 1 Peter 1:20, 2 Peter 3:8, Revelation 1:8, Revelation 11:17, and Revelation 22:13).

Impossible things
In Your name, they shall be done

That is, what is impossible for man is possible with God (Genesis 18:14, Jeremiah 32:17, Matthew 19:26, Luke 1:37, Luke 18:27, and Ephesians 1:19-20)

[Verse 2]

Freedom conquered, all our chains undone
Sin defeated, Jesus has overcome
Mercy triumphed when the third day dawned
Darkness was denied, when the stone was gone

Combines man’s trajectory from death is sin to life with Christ (Romans 6:1-11, Romans 7:4-6, Galatians 2:19-20, 2 Timothy 2:11, and 1 Peter 2:24), Jesus’ payment for our sins (Isaiah 53:1-12, Matthew 20:28, Mark 10:45, John 1:29, John 3:16, John 19:30, Acts 4:12, Acts 20:28, Romans 5:6-10, Romans 6:23, 1 Corinthians 1:30, 1 Corinthians 6:20, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Galatians 1:3-4, Galatians 3:13, Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 2:14, 1 Timothy 2:6, Titus 2:14, Hebrews 9:12, Hebrews 9:15, Hebrews 9:22, Hebrews 9:26, 1 Peter 1:17-21, 1 Peter 2:24, 1 Peter 1:18-19, 1 John 1:7, 1 John 2:1-2, and Revelation 5:9), and that God’s mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:13), completed by the death and resurrection of Jesus.

[Bridge]

Nothing shall be impossible

Repeats idea in Chorus, lines 3 and 4.

Your kingdom reigns unstoppable

His Kingdom goes on and on with God as its ruler (Exodus 15:18, Psalm 10:16, Psalm 29:10, Psalm 145:13, Psalm 146:10, Lamentations 5:19, Daniel 4:3, Daniel 6:26, Micah 4:7, 1 Timothy 6:16, 1 Peter 5:11, and Revelation 11:15).

We’ll shout Your praise forevermore

Man’s response to the works of God is eternal praise (Nehemiah 9:5, Psalm 30:12, Psalm 52:9, Psalm 86:12, Psalm 89:1, Psalm 115:18, Psalm 145:1-2, Psalm 145:21, and Revelation 5:9-13).

Jesus our God unstoppable

Repeats idea in Chorus, lines 3 and 4. It also explicitly states that Jesus is God (Isaiah 9:6-7, Isaiah 43:10-11, Matthew 1:23, Matthew 9:1-8, Mark 2:1-12, Luke 5:17-26, John 1:1-3, John 1:14, John 5:17-18, John 8:23-25, John 8:28, John 10:30-33, John 14:9, John 20:28-29, Philippians 2:5-6, Colossians 1:16-19, Colossians 2:8-9, Titus 2:13, 1 Timothy 6:14-16, Hebrews 1:10-12, Revelation 1:8, and Revelation 22:13).

Nothing shall be impossible
Your kingdom reigns unstoppable
We’ll shout Your praise forevermore
Jesus our God unstoppable

Repeats lines 1-4.

Nothing shall be impossible
Your kingdom reigns unstoppable
We’ll shout Your praise forevermore
Jesus our God unstoppable

Repeats lines 1-4.

Nothing shall be impossible
Your kingdom reigns unstoppable
We’ll shout Your praise forevermore
Jesus our God unstoppable

Repeats lines 1-4.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

There’s not much to say here. Elevation Worship intermixes words that are obviously Scripture with language accessible to a child, much less and unbeliever. If they cannot comprehend Elevation Worship’s message and its obvious connection with Christianity, they know nothing about Jesus.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

Let His glory go on and on!

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Elevation Worship’s Unstoppable God is an excellent worship song. It is jam-packed full of Biblical truths, including the Gospel message, God’s sovereignty over His creation, that Jesus is God, and that man responds to His wonderful acts with praise. His glory will go on and on during this song! Elevation Worship’s word choice makes it easy for all to comprehend their core message, that God does things impossible for us. Including saving us from our sins.

I highly recommend this for corporate worship.

Score: 10/10

Another excellent review of another excellent song!
An underappreciated part of these reviews is the massive lists of verses you provide. Job 42:2 would never occur to me, and i now really enjoy it!

sarah paelo

hey! just wondering, what does the first line of the song mean? (heaven thundered, and the world was born) if God created both heaven and earth? doesn’t the line mean heaven was first then only the world?

    Sarah,

    Great question!

It’s figurative language. “Heaven” is often used in modern worship music to represent God since the third heaven is His dwelling place.
