Contemporary Christian duo Shane & Shane started in 2001. They released a staggering 39 albums (including solo and Christmas), 4 live albums, and 3 EP’s.

Also, check out my reviews of Yearn, Though You Slay Me, and Psalm 23 (Surely Goodness, Surely Mercy).

1. What message does the song communicate?

Though God has the power to rescue Shane & Shane from whatever it is they are going through, God will respond on His timing, whether affirmatively or not.  Regardless of God’s reply, Shane & Shane will continue to worship and obey Christ, abandoning their will for His, even if they die as a result.  After they perish, they will spend eternity with Jesus, where there is zero weeping, waiting, and yearning.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

The entire thing is Scriptural.

[Verse 1]

Lines 1-4: This is similar to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego’s response to the King of Babylon in Daniel 3:18, that even if God doesn’t rescue them, they will obey God.  Also, see 2 Peter 3:9.

[Chorus]

Lines 1-5: Shane & Shane will discard their lives, surrendering to Jesus’ ways (Psalm 43:5, Isaiah 64:8, Matthew 10:38, Matthew 11:28-30, Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34-38, Mark 10:28, Luke 9:23, Luke 14:27, John 15:1-11, Romans 6:13, Romans 12:1-2, Galatians 2:20, Philippians 2:5-8, Hebrews 11:6, James 4:7-10, and 1 Peter 5:6).  Line 4 is possibly a reference to Psalm 77:6.

[Verse 2]

Lines 1-4: Shane & Shane will obey God, even if it kills them (Romans 14:8, Philippians 1:20, Philippians 2:17, 1 Corinthians 3:22-23, and 1 Thessalonians 5:10).

Side Note: In the lyrics provided, Verse 2 contains additional lines that are just Chorus repeated.  This is most likely a typo.

[Bridge]

Lines 1-8: Shane & Shane will enter God’s Heavenly Kingdom, where there is no more mourning, pain, or crying (Revelation 21:4).

Lines 9-16: Repeats lines 18.

[Outro]

Lines 1-3: Repeats Chorus, lines 4 and 5.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

They should interpret it similarly to my explanation in section 1.  Jesus is explicitly identified as Shane & Shane’s object of worship.  All the lyrics are written in plain language, with concepts easy for unbelievers to digest.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies Jesus, that He responds on His timing, Shane & Shane will live for Him in total abandon, and look forward to spending eternity with Him, both in this life and post-death.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Shane & Shane’s Song in the Night is Christ-centered.  Though they experience hardship and turmoil, they will let go of control of their lives and hand the reins over to Jesus.  They will trust Him, even if He doesn’t respond how and when they want Him to, even to their deaths, bringing Him glory.  They look ahead to the day that they enter His Kingdom with their spiritual bodies, where pain and suffering cease.  Unbelievers should easily interpret similarly.

I highly recommend this song for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
