1. What message does the song communicate?

YHWH will draw people to Himself.  We, who are lawbreakers, resistant to His calling, shall meet with Him in the air, receive His blessings, and will live forever.  We surrender to His ways, forsaking folly and follow Him, trusting that He will restore us to the kind of people we’ve always wanted to be: holy.  Second Adam & the New Creations also recognize that God establishes and defeats nations.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

The whole song is in agreement with Scripture.

[Verse 1]

YHWH, draw reluctant hearts

God draws people to Himself (John 12:32), including those of us who resisted Him in our sin (Hebrews 12:4).  YHWH is the Tetragrammaton that refers to the God of Israel, pronounced by Second Adam & the New Creations as “Yahweh”.

To You Let Sinners Fly
Take the bliss your love imparts
and drink and never die, drink and never die

God draws us to do three things:

  1. To fly, which means to come to Him (Matthew 11:28-30).
  2. Receive the provision that God offers to His children (Genesis 2:15-16, Genesis 9:3, Genesis 22:8, Exodus 16:1-36, Psalm 18:2, Psalm 34:10, Psalm 81:10, Psalm 84:11, Psalm 107:9, Proverbs 10:3, Malachi 3:10, Matthew 6:25-30, Matthew 7:7-8, Matthew 21:22, John 14:13-14, John 14:26, John 15:1-10, John 15:16, Romans 8:32, Ephesians 3:20, Philippians 4:19, 2 Corinthians 9:8, and 2 Corinthians 12:9).
  3. Drink the water that Christ offers to live forever (John 4:14).

[Verse 2]

Chase the shades of death away
And bid the sinner live
A beam of heaven, a vital ray
Its Yours to give

Combines two different opposites to describe our transformation, namely, darkness to light (Psalm 107:10-16, Luke 1:79, John 1:1-13, John 12:46, Ephesians 5:8, Colossians 1:13, and 1 Peter 2:9) and death to life (Romans 6:1-11, Romans 7:4-6, Galatians 2:19-20, 2 Timothy 2:11, and 1 Peter 2:24).

[Chorus]

Oh Change these wretched hearts of ours
And give them life divine

See commentary on Verse 2.  Specifically, about death to life.

Then shall our passions and our powers
Oh Lord be thine.

As part of our surrender to God, and in much the same way as Jesus in Matthew 26:39, Mark 14:36, Luke 22:42, and John 6:38, we give up our will to do His.

[Outro]

You Alone bring the dead to life

That is, spiritually dead.  Salvation cannot be found in anyone else except through Jesus (John 14:6 and Acts 4:12).

By You Alone will nations fall or thrive

God establishes and destroys governments (Deuteronomy 7:1-2, Jeremiah 18:8, Romans 13:1, and 1 Peter 2:13-17).

To You Alone may we as a people cry
For Mercy, to you let sinners fly.

A prayer offered to God that we would repent and trust in Jesus (Matthew 3:2, Matthew 4:17, Mark 1:15, Luke 24:47, Acts 2:36-38, Acts 3:19-21, Acts 20:21, and 2 Timothy 2:25-26).  Also, see Verse 1, line 2.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

The word “YHWH” is a dead giveaway that unbelievers will think Second Adam & the New Creations references the Jewish or Christian God.  It’s not immediately clear which interpretation is correct; However, I think most will probably conclude Christianity over Judaism.  After all, Jews don’t pronounce YHWH as “Yahweh”, chiefly, because according to them, we’re mispronouncing it and sometimes offend them by stating it as such.  Yet, I wonder how they know we’re wrong given that they don’t know how to pronounce YHWH either!

The only thing unbelievers might misunderstand is the concept of sin. To them, sin is mere mistakes, not lawbreaking.

Score: 8/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies God as the One who alone saves us, bestows upon us His blessing, and has ultimate authority over earthly governments.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Second Adam & the New Creations’ Let Sinners Fly is great.  It calls for YHWH to draw us sinners to Himself, making us spiritually-dead people in darkness come alive in the light, bringing Him glory.  He also creates and destroys sovereign nations. Unbelievers can follow most of it, except potentially the meaning of sin. Some Jews might find the artist’s pronunciation of YHWH offensive.

I recommend it for corporate worship.

Final Score: 9.5/10
