[Verse 1]

Oh my soul, oh my soul
Don’t give up
There is hope, there is always hope

Borrows from 2 Corinthians 4:16-18.

[Verse 2]

And there is peace
In the storm, in the storm

Internal peace perists amid external turmoil (John 14:27, John 16:29-33, Romans 5:1, Ephesians 2:14-15, and Colossians 3:15).

No, don’t forget
He is Lord, He is Lord of all

Passion reminds us that God is sovereign (Genesis 1:1, Deuteronomy 4:39, Deuteronomy 10:14, Joshua 2:11, Nehemiah 9:6, Psalm 29:10, Psalm 45:6, Psalm 50:7-15, Psalm 93:1-2, Psalm 115:3, Psalm 135:6, Isaiah 43:13, Isaiah 45:9-10, Isaiah 46:10, Lamentations 5:19, Daniel 4:35, Romans 9:19-21, Ephesians 1:11, Hebrews 1:8, James 4:15, Revelation 4:11, and Revelation 20:11).

[Chorus]

There is a king of glory, there is a God who saves
One who is strong and mighty, freedom is in His name
So, open the gates of heaven, lift up a shout of praise

Combines Psalm 24:7-10 (though reordered) with Christ as our Savior (Isaiah 45:21-22, Hosea 13:4, Luke 1:47, Luke 2:11, Acts 13:23, 1 Timothy 2:3, Titus 2:13-14, and 1 John 4:14).

There is a lion roaring, Jesus the king of glory

Jesus has spoken (Amos 3:8).

There’s no one like You

This only appears in Chorus’ second iteration.  God is unique (Exodus 8:10, Exodus 9:14, Deuteronomy 3:24, Deuteronomy 33:26, Jeremiah 10:6, 1 Samuel 2:2, 2 Samuel 7:22, 1 Kings 8:23, 1 Chronicles 17:20, Psalm 86:8, Psalm 89:6, Psalm 113:5-6, Jeremiah 10:7, Isaiah 40:18, and Isaiah 46:9).

It’s the Lord, strong and mighty
The Lord, mighty in battle

This is our king, this is the king of glory

Personalizes this King as ours.

Come on, sing to Him, sing to Him

Passion invites their audience to join in song.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

Unbelievers will know it’s religious given Verse 2’s “He is Lord of all” and Chorus’ mention of God.  They will think it’s Christian when hear the word “Jesus” in Bridge.  They will also likely conclude that Christians worship Jesus as their Lord and Savior, who rules the entire universe.  Passion’s intermixing of everyday language and Scriptural quoting/rephrasing eases them.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies Jesus as the incomparable God who rules the world and saves us, granting us hope.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Passion’s King of Glory is Biblical.  Jesus is the King of Glory, whose rulership extends beyond the physical universe and whose roar is heard by all.  He gives us internal peace beyond measure and hope beyond doubt.  These bring Him glory.  Unbelievers should be able to interpret similarly.

This song is appropriate for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
