American Contemporary Christian band I AM THEY began their career in 2011. Originally intended to be a one-off as the band Solomon’s Porch in 2008, the overwhelmingly positive response from listeners led them to cover songs twice a month before switching names.

They released two EP’s and three albums, including:

  • The Prelude (EP, 2011)
  • Sanctuaries (EP, 2013)
  • I Am They (2015)
  • Trial & Triumph (2018)
  • Faithful God (2020)

1. What message does the song communicate?

This song heavily relies on Jesus’ Parable of Two Foundations, that is, Jesus the solid rock and other foundations of sand. When wind and rain come, representing trials and tribulation, one’s ability to remain standing or fall depends on our foundation. I AM THEY, alongside other Christ-followers, will remain standing while others will experience a great collapse. I AM THEY invites other Christians to worship with them, hanging onto Jesus’ undeserved favor without end.

I am grateful that I AM THEY chose to explicitly name Christ as their rock. This helps to avoid ambiguity, avoiding other potentially legitimate interpretations.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

The entire song is consistent with the Scripture that it borrows from.

[Verse 1]

Lines 1-4:  Borrows from Jesus’ Parable of Two Foundations in Matthew 7:24-27, where Christ is the solid foundation where I AM THEY stands (Deuteronomy 32:4, 1 Samuel 2:2, 2 Samuel 22:47, Psalm 18:31, Psalm 28:1, Psalm 62:2, Psalm 94:22, Psalm 118:22, Isaiah 28:16, Matthew 21:42, Acts 4:11, 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, Ephesians 2:20, 2 Timothy 2:19, and 1 Peter 2:6).  When tribulation comes, I AM THEY will not be moved.

[Verse 2]

Lines 1-4: A retelling of Verse 1, including the repeated line 4.

[Chorus]

Lines 1-4: Despite the stormy, dark weather where God seems absent, I AM THEY still trusts in God, whose grace is unchanging.  He is faithful when they are not because He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13).  I AM THEY makes lemonade out of life’s lemons.

Line 5: Repeats Verse 1, line 4.

[Verse 3]

Lines 1-3: I AM THEY will eventually see the light of God that comes after moments of darkness (Psalm 30:5).

Line 4: Rewords Verse 1, line 4.

[Bridge]

Lines 1 and 2: Christ is explicitly named as the solid rock described in Verse 1 and repeated/reworded in subsequent sections.  It references Matthew 7:24-27 again, comparing Christ’s solid rock with other foundations of sand.

Line 3: I AM THEY invites others to join them in celebration.

Line 4: Essentially repeats Verse 1, line 4, except the pronoun changes from “my” to “our” signifying others whose foundation is Jesus.

Lines 5-12: Repeats lines 1-4.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

Unbelievers are probably familiar with the Two Foundation parable, with almost the entire lyrics borrowing from it.  I AM THEY mostly uses everyday language to communicate their point over and over again, stating in Bridge that Jesus is the rock they stand on.  Even those outside Christianity who are unfamiliar with this parable should have little to no problem interpreting this song.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies the Son of God that I AM THEY contrasts His foundation vs. others, that He remains while others will not.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

I AM THEY’s My Feet Are on the Rock is fantastic.  The majority of lyrics comes from Jesus’ Parable of Two Foundations, which compares those who obey Christ to those who don’t.  When troubles come, one’s ability to remain standing depends on our foundation: Jesus the rock or others the sand.  I AM THEY chose the rock, asking other Christ-followers to join them in worship.  Unbelievers will easily interpret similarly.

I highly recommend this song for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
